Queen's Platinum Jubilee Gift of Honiton Lace

Earlier this year a well-known local lace maker made an image of the Town Crest in Honiton lace. This was sent to Buckingham Palace in recognition of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee as a gift from the town.  Honiton Lace was first made in Honiton in approx 1560 and was a great cottage industry in the town until the early 1800's when a net making machine was invented.  Queen Victoria gave the industry a great boost in 1839 when she ordered that her wedding dress and veil be made of Honiton lace and her first child Princess Victoria also wore a robe made of Honiton lace for her christening.  In previous years the speaker of the House of Commons wore a jabot and cuffs made from Honiton lace.

FLOODING

Flooding is the responsibility of a range of people and organisations. The Town Council does not have responsibility to prevent or alleviate flooding. Nevertheless, the Council has an Emergency Plan and Flooding specific Action Card. It has also decided to distribute sandbags (provided by and also available from EDDC) and has a small stock of sand at the Beehive, which through prior arrangement, the public can collect.

The Environment Agency informs the Council of Flood Alerts and Flood Warnings together with a map and other information (eg how to prepare for flooding). These can be found at:

People can sign up to receive Flood Warnings from the Environment Agency at:

SOUTHWEST WATER - SAVE EVERY DROP

In February we launched our “Save Every Drop” campaign highlighting how climate change, increasing population and higher water demand is resulting in challenges for our water resources.  Higher demand leads to an increasing risk that what our region needs for drinking water requires us to take more water from the natural environment.

The campaign offers simple tips and advice on how to save water at home and at work and offers a range of simple to fit water efficiency devices. Working on the principle that if we all do a little, it will add up to a lot.

The benefits of reducing our demand are wide-ranging - Save Every Drop focuses on the positives of not having to take so much from the natural environment to meet our demands, but households and businesses on a water meter can also benefit from reduced bills for using less.

This water-saving campaign will evolve to meet changing behaviours and challenges. Throughout the summer we will be promoting this message across radio, billboards, buses, service station media, emails, letters, social media, and digital media targeting residents, businesses and tourists who visit the South West region.

We’re asking for your support to help share this important message with your communities and have developed a range of assets and materials to use as you think best to spread this message.

For more information, please visit our campaign website: Save Every Drop

SUSPECTED BIRD FLU IN EAST DEVON

Devon has seen a recent increase in the number of birds, of different breeds, with bird flu, and the current guidance is to not touch dead or visibly sick birds (or allow dogs near them).

You can make a report on the EDDC website here: Report a dead animal - Animal details

Any reports of sick or dead birds are dealt with quickly, and often on the same day. The EDDC team are fully trained and equipped with the correct PPE to deal with suspected cases of bird flu.

A press release on the latest details was sent out last week and can be read here for your information: 7 September 2022 - Bird flu cases in Devon prompt warning - East Devon

On 17 October 2022 an Avian Influenza Prevention Zone was declared by the Government across the whole of England - see below a link to the published leaflet. This was because of the increased number of cases of the disease across the country.
